Hypocrita plagifera (Felder & Felder, 1862) Felder, C. & Felder, R. (1862). Specimen faunae lepidopterologicae riparum fluminis Negro superioris in Brasilia septentrionali. Wiener Entomologische Monatschrift 6: 229-235; pp. 230-231, no. 186 (as Esthema plagifera). Translated from the Latin original. 186. Esthema plagifera Nob. Wings black on both sides, tinged with blue, the fore wings with two unequal white macular bands and a white dot interposed between them, the hind wings with a white discal patch divided by black veins in the metallic-blue basal half, beneath extended as far as the costa and there sprinkled with glaucous, the fore wings there with the margin shining green-blue in a certain position. Female. This remarkable species is larger than E. bicolora Cram. and has the wings more produced at the apex. The genera Esthema, Eucyane, Anthomyza, Phaloe, Phaloesia, Dioptis, Composia and others show at the sides of the first abdominal ring two openings, covered by a globular operculum. A similar structure was observed by the celebrated Guerin (Iconogr. du Regne animal, text p. 504) in the Glaucopidae and by the excellent Doubleday in the Erateinae among the Geometridae (Transact. of Ent. Soc. of London V. p. 111). Both authors regard it as the analogue of the tympanum of the cicadas. The Latin text reads: 186. Esthema plagifera Nob. Alis utrinque nigris, cyaneo tinctis, anticis fasciis binis inaequalibus macularibus punctoque interjecto albis, posticis plaga discali alba, venis nigris divisa in dimidio basali metallico-cyaneo, subtus usque ad costam extensa ibique glauco atomata, anticis ibidem margine viridi-cyaneo in certo situ fulgente. Similem structuram cel. Guérin (Iconogr. du Règne animal texte p. 504) apud Glaucopidas et excellens Doubleday apud Geometridarum Erateinas observarunt (Transact. of Ent. Soc. of London V. p. 111). Cicadarum tympani analogon uterque existimat auctor. Hering, M. (1925). Pericopidae. In: Seitz, A. (ed.), The Macrolepidoptera of the World, vol. 6, The American Bombyces and Sphinges. Alfred Kernen, Stuttgart; p. 436, pl. 61 e (as Eucyane plagifera). E. plagifera Fldr. (= uranigera Wkr.) (61 e). Body and forewing as in bicolor Sulz., at the base of the forewing only a blue stripe on the proximal margin. Basal area of the hindwing blue, with a broad discal band, which only extends to the anterior edge of the cell, broadly parted black by the veins. Bolivia, Amazons, East Peru. The bicolor paragraph referred to (same work, p. 436, pl. 61 c): E. bicolor Sulz. (= crocota Drc., dichroa Hbn.) (61 c). Base of the wing with several longitudinal stripes irrorated with blue, the discal band is straight, distinct, broadly parted black by the veins. Apical spot large. With or without a white spot between the bands. Internerval stripes of the hindwing narrow, two stripes in the cell. Fringes black, ventrum white. Guiana to South Brazil and Peru.
